こんにちは。営業の高鍋鮎美です。 
 
 
今回のメルマガは番外編として英語の名詞についてお話します。 
 
名詞は「覚えれば使える！」と思いがちですが、意外と難しさがあります。 
その代表格が冠詞、単数・複数形だと思いますが、 
もう一つ、「和訳すると同じ様な意味の単語の使い分け」も悩ましいところです。 
今回はこのテーマで幾つかご紹介していこうと思います。 
 
 
①「提案」： 
個人的には「proposal」や「suggestion」はよく使う単語ですが、 
最近その使い分けを初めて知りました！ 
 
辞書で「提案」と引くと5つの単語が出てきます。 
より意味の違いが分かるように英英辞典の説明文を書きます。 
 
・proposal： 
  a formal suggestion or plan（正式な提案や計画） 
 
・suggestion： 
  an idea or a plan that you mention for somebody else to think about 
　（他の人に検討するように促すアイディアや計画） 
 
・proposition： 
  an idea or a plan of action that is suggested, especially in business 
　（特にビジネスにおいて提案されたアイディアや行動計画） 
 
・offer： 
  an act of saying that you are willing to do something for somebody or  
  give something to somebody 
　（誰に何かしたり与えたりすることを望んでいると伝える行為） 
 
・motion： 
　a formal proposal that is discussed and voted on at a meeting 
　（会議により議論されたり採決された正式な提案） 
 
 
これを見ると、使い分けとしては、 
「proposal」が打合せをしたり書面化されて「正式」になった提案、 
「suggestion」は話している中で出てきた「～はどう？」位の提案、 
「proposition」はproposalが幅広く使えるのに対し、ビジネス限定の提案、 
「offer」は「～しますよ！」という申し出に近いニュアンス、 
「motion」は「動議」「提議」といったところでしょうか。 
 
 
②「状況」： 
続いても個人的には使う頻度が高いにも関わらず、 
使い分けがよく分からない名詞です。 
辞書で「状況」と引いてみると9個も単語が並んでいます！ 
 
・condition： 
　the state that something is in 
  （何かが置かれている状況） 
 
・situation： 
　all the circumstances and things that are happening at a particilar time 
  and in a particular place 
 （特定の時間、場所で起きている全ての状況や物事） 
 
・circumstance： 
　the conditions and facts that are connected with and affect a situation, 
  an event or an action 
　（ある状況や物事、行動に関連するまたは影響を与える状況や事実） 
 
・state： 
　the mental, emotional or physical condition that a person or thing is in 
  （その人や物が置かれている精神的、感情的、身体的状況） 
 
・atmosphere： 
　the feeling or mood that you have in a particular place or situation 
  （特定の場所や状況下で感じるの感覚や雰囲気） 
 
・environment： 
　the conditions that affect the behaviour and development of somebody 
  （人のふるまいや成長にに影響する状況＝＞環境） 
 
・surrounding： 
　that is near or around something 
  （地理的に近い周りの環境） 
 
・context： 
　the situation in which something happens and that helps you to  
  understand it 
  （何かが起こり理解の助けになっている状況＝>背景、前後関係、文脈） 
 
・status： 
　the situation at a particular time during a process 
  （プロセスにおける特定の時の状況）  
 
 
色々ありすぎて、ややこしいですが、 
「condition」は良し悪しが判断出来るような状況で、 
例えば、「体の調子が良い」や「装置の調子が悪い」などの時に使うようです。 
 
その他よく使われるところでは、 
「situation」はある特定の状況で、 
「circumstance」は周りの状況、 
「state」は一時的な状態、 
「status」は例えば工場のラインや、装置の一連の動作、 
または時間のかかる交渉など連続して行う事における特定の時の状況　 
と区別しておけば良さそうです。 
 
 
 
今回は使い分けが難しい名詞を2パターンご紹介しましたが、 
動詞でも形容詞でも副詞でも、このニュアンスの違いによる 
単語選びはいつも悩まされます。
